When your work is on the internet

The wonderful thing about building websites for a living is that you can work anywhere wireless internet exists. Happily, in 2020 that’s just about everywhere. Any room in the house, outside on the porch, dining room, a couch, really anywhere. And there’s no dress code! This kind of freedom can lead to a sort of complacency. If I can be comfortable wherever I work at home, then why go anywhere? Well, to be perfectly honest, it’s because that’s where the money is. So I force myself to go out and about from time to time.

Earlier this week, it meant a visit to The Avondale Coffee Club, a place I’d gone by a thousand times but had never visited. It struck me as I walked in- not only am I finally visiting a neighborhood place I always wanted to check out, but I was about to be in the company of all sorts of new people. New people can equal new opportunities, either as a potential working partner (as was the case with my meeting) or new clients. At the very least, it meant a new place to get a cup of coffee!

So the next time you find yourself working at home, in comfy clothes in a comfy chair get up and go somewhere new. Leave your headphones behind! Start a conversation and see where it could lead. It might be a huge business opportunity and a good cup of coffee.
